Abstract Metropolitan fringes are not only the main regions of economic growth and spatial expansion in metropolises, but also the most complex areas of decentralized governance. In order to cope with the expansion of metropolises and meet their development demands, metropolitan fringes tend to adopt different modes of decentralization for different subjects to adjust their governance structure of space, which manifests spatial patterns of urbanization in metropolitan fringes different from general areas. The relationship between governance reform and spatial change cannot be simple analyzed by linear thinking, but the characteristics which can be caught from complex social economy system are obvious and linked, so exploring the causality behind differential decentralization and fragmented urbanization spatial pattern is necessary and meaningful. This paper tries to construct a logical framework from decentralized governance to urbanization space. It analyzes differential decentralization in special governance pattern and multivariate fragmentation of urbanization spatial pattern, then based on which it explains the institutional logic between differential decentralization and multivariate fragmentation. In conclusion, it considers that the differential decentralization pattern of special governance is the direct cause of multivariate fragmentation of urbanization spatial pattern, therefore, the change of governance structure in metropolisesis urgent for the new urbanization.
